Keto breath is annoying.
Many dieters describe it as having a distinctive metallic smell. Walking around with this all day and talking to people will make anyone self-conscious.
Fortunately, keto gum freshens your breath real quick.
So in this post, I’ll go over the 10 best keto gum options and some healthier alternatives.
Can You Eat Gum on Keto?
You can eat gum on a ketogenic diet. Although most brands contain sugar, several companies started using natural sweeteners to make keto-friendly versions.
Best Keto Chewing Gum
When I started eating a low-carb diet, I noticed my breath smelled metallic after a few days. With a quick Google search, I found that this was completely normal, but it was still annoying.
So if you’re struggling with keto breath or want something to chew on doing the day, here are healthy options.
1. PUR Gum
PUR makes keto and vegan-friendly gum that contains no harmful additives or preservatives.
This aspartame-free gum uses a high-quality gum base, gum arabic, natural flavors, glycerol and carnauba wax.
You can also choose between tasty flavors like:
- Cinnamon
- Bubble gum
- Popcorn
- Spearmint
I noticed that when I chew gum containing artificial flavors, I get severe headaches. But with PUR Gum and some other options on this list, I feel fine.
2. XyliChew
As the name suggests, XyliChew uses xylitol for flavor and doesn’t contain artificial sweeteners. With a 70% xylitol content, XyliChew can help if you’re struggling with cavities or gum inflammation.
It also comes in cinnamon, ice mint and natural spearmint flavors. So if you have keto breath, chew one or two, and you’ll be good to go.
3. Epic Xylitol Gum
I like using Epic Xylitol Gum to satisfy my sugar cravings because it’s one of the sweetest keto gum brands. It’s also sugar and aspartame-free so you won’t experience the adverse effects associated with aspartame consumption.
Epic Dental created this gum, and its goal was to help rebuild teeth naturally using xylitol. So if you’re looking for gum that’ll help with dental health, Epic Xylitol Gum is for you.
You’ll find it in flavors like:
- Peppermint
- Fresh fruit
- Cinnamon
- Spearmint
- Wintergreen
Alternatively, you can buy an assorted 500-pack that contains all the different flavors.
4. Xyloburst
Xyloburst aims to improve dental health by cleaning your teeth. Like all keto gum, it’s sugar-free, aspartame-free and sweetened naturally. One serving only contains 2.4 calories and 0g net carbs, so it’s a good option for those looking to lose weight.
Xyloburst uses non-GMO ingredients like birch xylitol, gum base, peppermint oil, soy lecithin and calcium carbonate.
5. Peppersmith Gum
Peppersmith Gum is perfect for anyone struggling with keto breath because the extra strong eucalyptus flavor makes your breath smell fresh.
It comes in a box of 12, and you can choose between flavors like peppermint, lemon mints, strawberry and extra strong eucalyptus.
Peppersmith is flavored with 100% plant-based xylitol, making it keto and vegan-friendly. They also pride themselves in only using plants free from harmful pesticides and chemicals. The European Food Safety Authority approves Peppersmith, and many dentists in the UK recommend it.
6. Spry Gum
Spry Gum is a dental defense gum based out of South Africa. One serving contains enough xylitol to combat and manage tooth decay. It does this by reducing the number of harmful bacteria in your mouth while promoting the growth of good bacteria.
Spry Gum comes in a box of 10, so if you just want to test the gum, you won’t have to buy much.
7. Stevia Dent
Unlike most keto gum, Stevia Dent uses stevia to add flavor, giving it a different taste compared to xylitol.
Oscar Rogers founded Stevia Dent because his grandchildren were overeating sugary gum, and he wanted a healthier alternative. He prioritized flavor, but stevia still offers several health benefits. So if you want to improve your children’s dental health, Stevia Dent is for you.
It comes in tasty flavors like:
- Cinnamon
- Peppermint
- Wintergreen
8. B-Fresh Breath Freshening Gum
B-Fresh Gum is an all-natural breath freshener that comes in a bottle of 100 pieces. It contains added vitamin B12 for an extra boost while being vegan and keto-friendly. Also, if you’re gluten intolerant, you’ll be glad to hear that this delicious gum is gluten-free.
You can choose between the following flavors:
- Mandarin
- Orange
- Grapefruit
- Lemon
9. Zellie’s Dental Gum
Zellie’s is another gum that’s specially crafted to help with oral health. It’s made with sugar alcohols like xylitol, protecting against cavities and gum inflammation.
It also helps with dry mouth because it’s super juicy when you bite into it.
Zellie’s is so confident in its product that it guarantees you’ll see a difference in your oral health within 30-days of constant use. Dr. Ellie founded Zellie’s and, using her decades of experience, created one of the best gums on the market.
10. The Humble Co. Chewing Gum
Dr. Noel Abdayem founded The Humble Co. in 2013 after returning from volunteer work in Jamaica.
The Humble Co. doesn’t use plastic to store its products which helps with ocean pollution. It also uses all-natural ingredients when making chewing gum, so it’s keto-friendly and won’t trigger inflammation.
Healthier Alternatives To Keto Gum
If you’re looking for other options that’ll get rid of keto breath, consider the following.
Licorice Root
For thousands of years, civilizations used licorice root to treat multiple ailments like upset stomach, inflammation and respiratory problems. The ancient Egyptians even used it as a sweet drink for their pharaohs.
If you want to spice up your keto diet, eat some licorice root instead of gum. It’s sweet, so it’ll satisfy any sugar cravings.
Nuts
If you use gum to keep your hands and mouth busy, consider swapping it out with healthy keto nuts like pecan, Brazil and Macadamia nuts.
These nuts boost fat intake while giving you a tasty snack to chew on throughout the day. It also works as a quick breakfast if you’re in a rush.
Water
If you’re using keto gum to keep your breath smelling fresh, try drinking water. It might sound simple, but a dry mouth is a big reason behind bad breath. So instead of buying sugar-free gum, invest in an aluminum bottle and sip on it throughout the day to keep your mouth moist.
Ginger Tea or Coffee
Ginger contains enzymes that break down bacteria in your mouth responsible for bad breath. Unfortunately, eating ginger isn’t pleasant. That’s why I like adding it to my tea or coffee in the morning, so I get an energy boost while preventing bad breath.
Dried Meat
Dried meat is my favorite chewing gum alternative since you can carry it with you anywhere and start snacking. Also known as beef jerky, it’s tasty and keeps your hands and mouth busy.
However, when shopping for beef jerky, watch out for anything containing modified food starch, sugar or preservatives because it triggers inflammation and raises blood sugar levels. Opt for dried meat that only uses salt.
If you can’t find organic beef jerky, try making it yourself at home. All you need is beef and salt. Once you’ve cut your beef into strips, toss it in a bowl, and add salt. Next, get some racks and lay your beef strips on them.
Last, put it next to a fan, and after 24 hours, you’re good to go.
Final Word on Sugar-Free Gum
Keto-friendly gum is a convenient way to get rid of keto breath. Several companies like Zellie’s and PUR make high-quality chewing gum that doesn’t kick you out of ketosis or trigger inflammation. And if you want to spice up your keto diet, consider introducing alternatives like beef jerky, nuts or licorice root.
